Using this website
The website serves pages, images and scripts through its hosting service. Requests necessarily send connection information, including an IP address, requested URL and browser headers, to the host. This supports delivery, security and fault investigation. We use legitimate interests in operating a secure, accessible publication for this essential processing.
Search runs in your browser against the site’s content. Search terms are not sent to a separate search provider. Some reading checklists, quiz scores and notebook features use local storage on your device. Information saved in these features remains in that browser; you can remove it using the feature’s reset control or your browser’s site-data settings. Anyone sharing the same browser may be able to see it.
Email enquiries
If you email us, we receive the address, message and attachments you send. We use them to answer the enquiry, investigate a correction or deal with a rights request. Our basis is legitimate interests in responding to correspondence and maintaining accurate content; legal obligations may also apply to particular requests. Please send only the details needed to explain the issue.
We retain correspondence while it is needed to answer the request and afterwards only where necessary to document a material correction, manage a continuing dispute or meet a legal obligation. Retention depends on the nature and continuing relevance of the enquiry. Request deletion at the address above; any lawful reason to retain information will be explained in response.
External services and commercial links
Accommodation buttons pass through the CJ affiliate network to Booking.com. Those services receive the information needed to open and attribute the link and may process your data under their own policies. A booking, payment or retailer account is handled by the destination service. We do not receive your payment-card details through this website. Read the destination’s privacy notice and consent choices before using its services.
Waterstones, Audible, official attractions and other linked sites operate independently. A link opens their service, where their privacy and cookie rules apply. Embedded YouTube videos use the privacy-enhanced youtube-nocookie domain; playing a video connects you to YouTube. Our hosting and email services process information needed to deliver their functions. Where a provider transfers data internationally, its applicable safeguards and policies govern that processing.
Analytics, advertising and cookie settings
This version loads no Google Analytics or AdSense scripts and sets no advertising or analytics cookies itself. The local features described above use browser storage to support the choices you make. You can clear that storage without contacting us. External sites can set their own cookies after you follow a link or play a video.
The Privacy and cookie settings link returns to this explanation. If analytics or advertising is introduced, the notice and consent controls must be updated before those services begin collecting data. No second consent banner is used.
Your rights and complaints
Depending on the circumstances, you can request access to your personal information, correction, erasure, restriction, portability or object to processing based on legitimate interests. Where processing relies on consent, you can withdraw it. A request may require proportionate information to establish that it concerns your data. Email the controller, explaining the request and relevant correspondence.
You may complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office about the handling of your personal information. You can also contact us first so that we can investigate. General guidance is available from the ICO’s privacy information.
